Nyeri County has named Ms Caroline Wanjiru Karugu, a technocrat, as its Deputy Govenor.
Ms. Karugu is the Chair of the Board Technical Committee. She has over 12 years’ experience in regional capital markets and financial services. She was appointed by the county’s Govenor, Kahiga Mutai, who was elevated to become the Govenor, following the the death of Dr Wahome Gakuru.
Dr Gakuru died on November 7 last year in a freak road accident at Kabati along the Thika-Sagana highway in Murang’a County.
She is an alumnus of the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management (Germany) and the University of Leicester (UK) has a wealth of regional capital markets and financial services experience spanning over 12 years in various organizations including Britam.
She is currently the Managing Director of Jabali Microserve Limited.
Her name was sent to the county assembly of Nyeri on Thursday and forwarded to the Committee on Appointments, which is chaired by the Speaker.
She is expected to answer questions on her experience, personal life and suitability for the county’s second highest position. But the vetting process is unlikely to stop her.
If she is approved by the county assembly, Ms Karugu will become the country’s first female deputy Govenor under this term. The county has remained without a deputy for almost six months now.
Attention now shifts to Nairobi, which is now the only county without a deputy govenor, following the sudden resignation of Polycarp Igathe from the position.
